Grand Torino

Just got back from the theater watching Clint Eastwood's Grand Torino. It was a fantastic film. Clint Eastwood is pretty hilarious in it. Very well done.

I'm humbled in your pretty lens

So I'm a somewhat new fan of the music of Animal Collective. In the past, Strawberry Jam was the only album of theirs I was exposed to and that was an unpleasant listen to say the least. But their 2005 album Feels is a lovely collection of songs that embody all the elements of love, awkwardness, and intimacy that sounds and melodies can offer. It is a definite contrast to their new album; Feels is much more poetic in its lyricism and relying on delay-drenched guitar lines and the use of acoustic instruments compared to the electronica influences of 2009's Merriweather Post Pavilion. In many of Feels tracks, ambience and space play a big role as musical atmospheres are formed in the song structures. I highly recommend this album to all music snobs, hopeless romantics,
and most of all, you.

Avey Tare & Kría Brekkan

Awwww. The married couple, Avey Tare, of Animal Collective, and Kría Brekkan, of múm make music together. And they have an album compiled of home recorded folk songs. And these songs are played in reverse for the listener's enjoyment. Its quite the trip. It's very beautiful as well.I hope one day I can make music with my future wife too. That would be pretty sweet. If only.


Karen O The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is also a solo artist. She has an acoustic side project known as Native Korean Rock. It's lo-fi acoustic love songs. It's obviously different from her band's work, but in a good way. Very intimate. But the recording quality is pretty poor. Hopefully they come out with a professional EP soon. Speaking of Karen O, who is related to director Spike Jonze; I can't wait for Where the Wild Things Are. It's gonna be so good......















Couple more weeks till I get my melodica....

oh, and check out this movie sometime. Waltz of Bashir. It's a heartbreaking and hypnotic animated film on the 1982 Lebanese conflict told through flashbacks from the narrator. I think it's nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars.

i'm starting this film up tonight. I can't sleep. So we'll see how this one turns out. I've heard good things. peace.

Brooke Waggoner and other nice findings

I was driving back with some friends from an Eagle Scout/Greenwood/Montez show in Decatur when I heard someone requested "Brooke Waggoner" into our little iPod playlist mix. I had never heard of her and didn't know what to expect. She sounds like the spawn of Feist and Rufus Wainwright. It's great classy pop with very good piano playing.

Jonny Greenwood is the man. If your wanting to be in a trippy mood and need some nice free jazz/experimental whathaveyou/ crazy good music, look no further than his work for the Bodysong soundtrack. Its great.

Paper Route is playing in Greenville in a month or so, and I am pretty much excited. Their music is a great listen for any indie/ambient pop fan. The musicianship and little details that go into their songwriting never ceases to amaze me.

Aaron Roche

This is a singer songwriter whom I've been taking a liking to. Its really sparse and beautiful music. He also has done a lot of work with The Winston Jazz Routine, which is a plus.

i am finding it harder and harder to write stuff down on here.

i'm too abstract and you would just get confused....

but here are some themes/ideas/random jargon that i've been throwing around in my head as of lately:

1. I'm trying to be more creative in my life- trying new things/experiences

2. Adulthood is creeping up on me and I'm kinda scared

3. Adulthood is creeping up on me and I'm thrilled and excited

4. Pictures of balloons, themes of "floating", balloons in general, have been very frequent in my life recently

5. Humanity truly doesn't grasp how loving God is. (say that it's just "too good to be true") more to come...

6. I really want to save polar bears from having to swim and eventually die out in the ocean

7. I don't know where I'm going or what I'm going to do and I'm loving every second of it

8. I want to live deeply and suck the marrow out of life

......and now take a deep breath and sigh,

some cool tunes

I've stumbled over some great music throughout the week and I've decided to share some of the little gems I've found. My musical tastes at the moment has been heavy on the shoegaze, ambient, and experimental backgrounds. The dreamier, the better. I hope you take the time to check out these great artists.

Muhr is a great one man band. He definitely is a ambient/electronica artist, but also employs classical and film score elements into his music. A great listen to fall asleep to.


Mógil is a half Icelandic, half Bulgarian group. Shimmering guitar lines, violins, chimes and bells, clarinets, whistling, beautiful vocals; its all here. One could say there music shifts between modern classical, opera, and the signature post-rock sound of Iceland. It's a beauty to listen to; almost spiritual at times.



School of Seven Bells is a three piece band consisting of Ben Curtis from Secret Machines and identical twins, Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, formerly of On! Air! Library! Combining the wash and dreamy sounds of My Bloody Valentine, vocal harmonies of Cocteau Twins, and something completely their own, School of Seven Bells is a soundscape pop masterpiece.

Hailing from England, these two boys sure know how to make some creative tunes. New Noise comments "rarely have two musicians sounded so much like the end of the world." Percussive, atmospheric, and hypnotic, The Fuck Buttons are fucking amazing.

Ok, La Dispute isn't necessarly "new" music for me, but this band has been a huge inspiration and love of mine for quite some time. Their album Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair is a poetic, bittersweet, and ultimately hopeful tale on love, community, relationships, and the great existential struggle told through the art of music. Guitar lines chaotically, yet beautifully weave out melodies, dynamics rise and fall, and Jordan's vocals are as yearning and passionate as ever. You will not be dissapointed.

Animal Collective

today, i have found something that I thought was not lost, but had lost its spark. I have found my love for the arts and creativity. Do you ever find yourself listening to a new album, reading a book, or looking at a piece of art and thinking, "god, this is good." That happened to me with Animal Collective's new listen Merriweather Post Pavillon (which isn't technically out, thank you megaupload) Now, I had no real desire for their last outing, it seemed too cluttered and amatuer. This album is different. They've matured. You can't help but listen to the little complexities that these guys put into their art and how the rhythms and beats make you want to stop at nearest rave. It's art, yet its fun. A lot of experimental/avant guarde bands tend to do away with the fun factor. Animal Collective doesn't make that mistake. So if you want to listen to a great indie/trance/african beat/who knows? album. Check them out.
